We've got tips for having the best basement waterproofing!

Steps To Take If You Have a Leak In Your Basement

A leaking basement is one of the most frustrating issues that homeowners face. The problem arises mostly from water runoff and ground water seepage on the floor, wall joints, cracks, or holes. The infiltrating water can pave way for several potential hazards ranging from mildew, mold, unwanted insects, rodent infestations, to structural damage of your home. To avoid such hurdles, you need to take the following measures:

Remove materials and items

Organic materials, including fabric, paper, leather, and wood can attract mold if left wet for more than two days. Thus, remove your possession from the leaking basement, dry them, save what you can, and discard the rest if possible.

Pump out standing water

If the basement is partially flooded, use a wet-dry vacuum to suck up the water. You should consider consulting a disaster mitigation specialist or plumber if the basement is fully flooded. After pumping the water out, run a dehumidifier to desiccate the area.

Control water runoff outside the house

Ensure that the downspouts and gutters are clear and unclogged to control water flows. Also, install downspout extensions to direct the water away from the foundation of your home.

Repair holes/cracks and waterproof the walls

If you notice holes and cracks in the basement, use hydraulic cement to patch them and avoid water seepage. Similarly, you should apply waterproofing materials to fill in the pores in the walls.

Install a drainage system

You should put in place drainage tubing under the basement floor, which is attached to a sump basin and pump. Through its perforations, the tubing will take in ground water, carry it to the basin and the pump expels it from the basement.
